UFOs – “Have you ever seen anything up there?”
UFOs – “Have you ever seen anything up there?”
I had an enquiry through my website this week and it was one of the most common questions that I receive – “Have you ever seen anything up there?”. This question probably comes in second to queries about a career in aviation and while it surprises me, it also displays the interest that UFOs still generate in our community. [I realise that the current term is Unidentified Anomolous Phenomena (UAP) but I’ll stick with UFO for old times’ sake.]
I thought I’d write this post as up until recently, the answer was a fairly firm “no”. There had been one night over central Australia in the 1990s where I’d seen a series of lights but I’m now satisfied that they were most likely a meteor shower.
However, of late, I have seen lights that I am yet to positively identify and I am not the only pilot to see them. Typically, they appear not long before dawn but do not move in a way that I can associate with space junk, shooting stars or satellites. (See the link). They vary in brightness, move in random directions and I’ve seen up to seven at once.
The first sighting was off the west coast of the United States and the video included in this post was en route from South Africa to Australia. However, without bursting anyone’s bubble, I think there is a logical explanation in this case. Personally, I think what I am seeing is Elon Musk’s “Starlink” launching its string of satellites.
I’m not raining on the parade as there are still a lot of UFO events that cannot be explained. It’s just that after 35 years of flying, I’m yet to see something that cannot be rationally explained
