Forays into Film.
As they say, blink and you’ll miss it. That is the best way to describe my film credit in the National Geographic IMAX production, “Living in the Age of Airplanes”. The movie was a massive undertaking by Brian Terwilliger of “One Six Right” fame as he ventured to every continent in order to tell the story. When it came to Australia, I was able to assist Brian with the production and it was a fascinating insight into a world far removed from the flight deck.
Similarly, in 2020 as the pandemic gripped global aviation, I contributed to a BBC World News documentary titled, “The Virus that Killed the Jumbo Jet”. In addition to providing some background and footage, I appeared briefly and voice over another section. Once again, as an author, I was stunned by the global reach of film.
I was honoured to be a part of both of these productions.
By chance, this week I encountered a film producer. We discussed how there had been some film interest in my book, “Without Precedent” that ultimately did not come to fruition. However, I have always seen that story as a potential documentary, rather than feature film. Conversely, my current work which details the love and loss of my mother in wartime during her service as a “Hush Hush Girl”, definitely has the makings of a true romance set in turbulent times.
Obviously, the priority is to complete and publish my mother’s tale but the thought of it becoming a film intrigues me and I know mum would be thrilled if she was still with us. And so, I shall continue to form her story with words, while keeping one eye to the future. The possibility of sharing her story through film would uncover a little known story of the women that manned remote radar stations for the Air Force, intertwined with a love story that is beyond any work of fiction.
For now, it is back to the manuscript.
