Solo Flight

Solo Flight.

i have spent the last two weeks training young pilots towards their first solo flight. The young girls and guys of the Australian Air Force Cadets never cease to impress me – both in the cockpit and on the ground. For all those espousing negativity about Australian youth, they should meet some of these young people.

From a purely selfish perspective, the chance to fly something far less complex than a Boeing or Airbus is refreshing, while noting the advancement of the students is incredibly rewarding.

I must admit that I envy them for being at the start of their aviation journey while mine is in the final stages of twilight. I have no regrets as I review the last 40-plus years but the thrill of that first solo flight, that first solo cross country exercise, that first spin is an emotion that I wish I could live through again. Memories are wonderful but can lack the fresh excitement of discovery.

So I will continue to silently reminisce about that morning in 1981 when my wheels left the earth with a vacant seat beside me for the first time. And I will continue to steer others towards that goal in what, for me, is one of the most inspiring challenges of my present hours aloft.

To all those beginning their aviation journey – savour it. Don’t wish it away with impatience for bigger and faster craft. Take in the lessons along the way and especially the joy that is to be found in flight.
